Classification:
Antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. Also used as a preventative medication to decrease the risk of acquiring the AIDS defining illness mycobacterium avium complex (MAC).
A Guide to Mycobacterium Avium Complex
Form:
- 250mg tablet (white in color)
- 500mg tablet (yellow in color)
- 125mg/5ml powder
- 250mg/5ml powder
Usual Dosage:
500mg twice per day
Important Note - dose may be adjusted in the presence of kidney disease
Instructions:
- Can be taken with or without food.
- If taking as a short course for an acute infection, take Biaxin until all the medication has been taken even if you feel better.
- If taking as a prophylaxis medication, take as prescribed each and everyday.
Important Note - Notify your doctor of all medications being taken prior to starting Biaxin.
Side Effects to Report to Your Doctor:
- Diarrhea
*Important Note - If diarrhea becomes severe and prolonged, stop taking Biaxin and call your doctor. - Nausea / vomiting
- Headache
- Indigestion
- Abdominal pain
Drug Interactions and Incompatibility:
- Do not take with the drugs Orap, Propulsid, or Seldane
